Adventure Awaits: SMA Teen Summer Camp’s Overnight Camping Trips Explained

Posted by Jud Millar on Tue, Mar 18, 2025

Teens + Nature + Adventure + Camping Overnights = Memories That Last a Lifetime at SMA Teen Summer Camp!

At Stone Mountain Adventures Teen Summer Camp (SMA), we believe that some of the most unforgettable memories are made under the stars. That’s why our overnight camping trips are a cornerstone of the SMA experience. These adventures are more than just a night away from camp—they’re an opportunity for campers to bond, challenge themselves, and immerse in the beauty of Central Pennsylvania’s wilderness. Let’s dive into what makes SMA’s camping overnights so special!

What Are SMA’s Camping Overnights?

Our camping overnights typically last about 24 hours, starting with an afternoon activity, followed by a night under the stars, and wrapping up with a morning activity before returning to camp for lunch. These trips are activity-based, meaning campers get to focus on something they love while enjoying the thrill of sleeping outdoors.

We usually send out three or four groups at a time, each focused on a different activity. This means campers can choose the adventure that excites them most:

  1. Wakeboarding and Waterskiing Overnight

    • Location: Raystown Lake

    • What to Expect: Spend the afternoon wakeboarding or waterskiing on the lake, then camp under the stars. Wake up to more watersports in the morning before heading back to camp.

  5. Mountain Biking Overnight

    • Location: Allegrippis Trail System at Raystown Lake

    • What to Expect: Spend the afternoon exploring the world-class Allegrippis Trail System, known for its thrilling single-track trails and stunning lake views. After a day of biking, camp under the stars and wake up ready for another morning of riding before heading back to camp for lunch.

Each group consists of about 12 campers and 3 staff members, creating a close-knit experience where everyone can bond and grow together.

Why Are Camping Overnights So Special?

For many campers, these overnights are a highlight of their summer. Here’s why:

  • First-Time Adventures: For some campers, it’s their first time sleeping in a tent, mountain biking on challenging trails, or spending a night in the wilderness. It’s a chance to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.

  • Small Group Bonding: With just 12 campers and 3 staff, these trips foster deep connections. Campers share stories, laugh around the campfire, and create memories that last a lifetime.

  • Skill Building: Whether it’s perfecting a waterskiing technique, learning to set up a tent, navigating a hiking trail, or mastering mountain biking skills, campers gain valuable skills and confidence.

  • Unplugged and Immersed: Without the distractions of technology, campers fully engage with nature and each other. It’s a chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors.

A Night to Remember

Evenings on these overnights are magical. Campers gather around the campfire to share stories, roast marshmallows, and enjoy delicious meals like melting pies (a camper favorite!). The combination of adventure, camaraderie, and the serenity of nature creates an experience that’s hard to beat.

Back at Camp: Stories to Share

When campers return to SMA, they’re bursting with stories to tell. Whether they were wakeboarding at Raystown Lake, climbing cliffs, canoeing down the river, hiking through the woods, or shredding the Allegrippis Trails, everyone has a unique adventure to share. Even the campers who stayed behind for small-group activities in camp have their own tales to tell, making for lively conversations and a sense of shared excitement.
