SMA camp counselor Sarah Bademan '12 has been involvedwith THON for the past three years while a student at Penn State University. The PSU Dance Marathon, commonly referred to as THON is:
  • a two-day dance marathonthat takes place the Bryce Jordan Center at thePennsylvania State Universitywith
  • the purpose of THON is to raise money to combat pediatriccancer
  • THON is the largest student run philanthropy in the world!
THON was started in 1973 by the university's Interfraternity Council and in its first year more than $2,000 was raised with 39 couples dancing for 30 hours straight. Last year 15,000 PSU students raised more than $10 million dollars at THON. The money that is raised is donated to The Four Diamonds Fund, a charity devoted to defeating pediatric cancer through research and caring for patients at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. It is an amazing event with the more than 15,000 students, the families of patients and the local community involved with the rallying cry, "FOR THE KIDS!"
In past years Sarah was a THON Administrative Assistant.  This year Sarah will be one of the 700 dancers who will take the floor this weekend and dance for 46 hours straight!  Sarah says, "I have been training hard and working on my dance moves all year for this weekend! Just standing on my feet for 46 hours seems daunting enough, but to dance for that many hours seems impossible. I am really excited. I have put so much time and energy into THON over the years that dancing this weekend feels will be a culmination of it all and the highlight of my Penn State career." We wish Sarah and all the dancers the best of luck in this worthy cause and we hope to stop by the BJC this weekend!
