Stone Mountain Adventures Hosts First-Ever Pennsylvania Climbing Advocacy Summit!

Posted by Jud Millar on Thu, May 29, 2025

We were thrilled and honored to host the inaugural Pennsylvania Climbing Advocacy Summit here at Stone Mountain Adventures from May 2–4, 2025. This exciting weekend brought together passionate climbing advocates, stewards, and stakeholders from across the state, united by a shared goal: to protect and shape the future of rock climbing in Pennsylvania.

From Friday’s welcome gathering and fireside hangout to Sunday’s engaging World Café discussions and crag site visits, our property buzzed with energy, collaboration, and a deep love for the outdoors. Speakers like Nathan Reigner, Diane Kripas, Daniel Dunn, Keith Christenson, and many more inspired us with stories, data, and dreams for the future of climbing access and stewardship.

On Sunday afternoon, SMA Director Jud Millar joined former Donation Rock Owner Jim Kyper to discuss the how and why of the land transfer from Jim Kyper to SMA.  In addition rock climbing advocates Ken and Scott lead guided site visit to Donation Rocks, showcasing the impact of partnerships between camps, conservationists, and the climbing community. It was a perfect example of how SMA not only introduces campers to climbing but also plays an active role in preserving the places we love.

One of the highlights of the weekend came on Saturday night when we added a little fun to the mix with Rock Climbing Twister on our vertical, man-made climbing wall! Imagine a classic game of Twister—with climbers stretching for “right hand red” or “left foot green”—but played while suspended in harnesses and hanging from holds. It was an absolute hit, sparking laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of memorable moments. It reminded us all that advocacy and stewardship don’t have to be serious all the time—there’s always room for fun.

We’re incredibly grateful to have received this Twister climbing wall as a generous donation to camp. It’s already bringing joy and energy to our events, and we know it’s going to be a favorite activity among campers this summer. We can’t wait to see the creativity, confidence, and laughter it inspires as kids challenge themselves in new, playful ways on the wall!

Parents, this summit is a clear reflection of why our climbing program matters. Your camper isn't just scaling rocks—they’re stepping into a vibrant and growing community that values stewardship, sustainability, and connection. As we head into summer, we’re more excited than ever to take campers climbing, to help them fall in love with the outdoors, and to teach them what it means to be responsible adventurers.

We’re proud that SMA served as the host site for this landmark event, and we’re even prouder of what it means for your camper’s summer experience. Let the climbing begin!
