I had a trip down memory lane on Saturday when Sherri Comerford (previously Umanski) stopped by the SMA booth at the White Flint Mall Camp Fair with her 5 year old daughter Eva. Sherri and I were campers together when camp was still called Horsepower Adventures way back in 1984, 1985 and 1986! We had some fun playing “remember when…” and she was surprised to see how much everything at camp looks the same. Sherri said that when her daughter Eva is old enough there’s a great chance she’ll be a camper at SMA. So we signed up our first camper for Summer 2019, Eva Comerford!

I had an awesome weekend in the DC area this weekend at a camp fair at the White Flint Mall in the Bethesda, MD. I met with many of perspective new families and got a lot of people excited about Stone Mountain Adventures. The highlight of the weekend was meeting up with some SMA Veteran Campers at the fair who spent some time sharing memories and a few laughs. Current SMA Campers who stopped by our booth and spent some time include Nick Walden (SMA ’09, ’10, ‘11), “Becca Blue” Lewis (SMA4, ‘11) and Ben Gross (SMA2 ’10, ’11).

Former SMA Campers at Juniata College and PSU!
What do five students at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, have in common? They all learned the value of relationships within a tight-knit community while at Stone Mountain Adventures and how that experience can make a teen’s life that much richer. While SMA has had second generation campers and campers return as counselors, something new happened in the fall of 2010. Five former campers found themselves at a small, private liberal arts college less than 10 miles from SMA in the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania.

For the past 28 summers SMA campers have participated in service projects; community service is and has been an integral part of the SMA experience. New this summer is the SMA Service Learning Program which will focus on continued meaningful projects and expanded ones as well. Campers will soon be able to sign up for service projects two mornings or afternoons per week in addition to the traditional Saturday afternoon service time.

Can you believe that it is already time for this session to go white water raftering? Tomorrow SMA hits the class III rapids of the Youghiogheny River for a seven mile white water rollercoaster ride! If Hershey Park wasn’t enough excitement, this trip has the campers psyched for an entire day adventure that they will never forget. Teamwork, determination, and positive attitudes make nicely for a successful fun rafting team. SMA is early to rise tomorrow to hit the road early for our big adventure.
