How Will COVID-19 Affect SMA Teen Camp in 2021?

After a safe, successful and COVID-19 free summer in 2020 we are all looking forward to the Stone Mountain Adventures (SMA) Summer of 2021.  Safely running an overnight summer camp in the middle of a pandemic was an incredible achievement and we did so by our vigilance, our devotion to our COVID-19 Protocols and our attention to detail. We required all campers and staff to be tested pre-camp thus creating our COVID-19 Free SMA Bubble.

We partnered with the CDC, the Pennsylvania Health Department, the American Camping Association, local healthcare professionals and an Epidemiologist from Penn State University to create a comprehensive 32 page SMA COVID-19 Protocol Document.  These protocols provided a roadmap for how to navigate the complicated nuances of safely running an overnight camp during a pandemic.  COVID-19 will likely be with us in some form this summer and we will be ready.  The success we achieved last summer has prepared us to provide another healthy summer at SMA in Central PA. Here is an overview of our COVID-19 Protocol from 2020.

A Message From Camp Director Jud about SMA1

Posted by Jud Millar

Wed, May 27, 2020

This is Camp Director and Owner Jud Millar from Stone Mountain Adventures (SMA).  First, I want to start off by thanking you all for your continued support, patience, and understanding during this difficult time. We are incredibly grateful for all the positive phone calls and e-mails in response to the video that my daughter Molly and I made addressing the “What If’s” of the SMA summer of 2020. I’ve always said we’ve had the greatest families at Stone Mountain Adventures and this was even more evident during this extraordinary time.

A COVID19 Interview with SMA Teen Camp Director Jud Millar

Check out this video of Molly Millar trying to solve the biggest mystery of all: What's Happening With Camp This Summer?

Due to the ongoing COVID19 Pandemic we have extended the due date for tuition balance from May 1st to June 1st.
June 1st is 33 days away and we feel that we will have more information about the summer by then.  Please remember that our absolute number one priority is and always will be the health and safety of our campers and staff. Since my parents Pam and Biff founded Stone Mountain Adventures in 1983, we have been bringing campers and staff together from around the country and around the world. We are working hard to understand this complicated situation and this new ever-evolving reality that is COVID-19. Please know that every decision we make moving forward will be based on the health and safety of your camper.

We feel that the summer of 2020, if permitted to proceed, has the potential to be the most important camp season in our children's lives. Not since 9/11 have our children been exposed to such stress and an increased level of anxiety. Never have positive face to face social interactions been so important and needed.

We are all living in uncertain times.  COVID19 has altered every aspect of our lives as we all shelter in place and practice social distancing.  Social connection is still important  to all of us and it has been incredible to see how many people in our Stone Mountain Adventures family took time to dig out their favorite SMA T-shirt and post it online.  Check out this video #smaTshirtWeek:

Dear Stone Mountain Adventures Families:

We hope that this email finds you and your family well. As we all try to cope with our new realities of this COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing and family isolation, we are dreaming of being back here in Central Pennsylvania at Stone Mountain Adventures with your kids for camp this summer.

It feels like with the 24-hour news cycle and the constant barrage of changes, cancellations and warning there is more unknown and than known. I imagine that, like us, for you and your family this has created ever changing emotions (including anxiety) with more questions than answers. In these uncertain times we hope that Stone Mountain Adventures can remain a spark of hope for campers as we move through these next few challenging weeks and/or months.

The purpose of this email is to connect and to provide you with what we hope will be some peace of mind, and even a little optimism, regarding some important questions and issues related to the upcoming Stone Mountain Adventures Summer of 2020.
