Watch the '15 SMA Mountain Biking Teen Summer Camp Video!

Posted by Jud Millar on Fri, Dec 18, 2015

The Summer of 2015 was the "Summer of the Mountain Bike" at SMA Teen Summer Camp.  We had campers and staff who were passionate about mountain biking and shared that passion with everyone at camp.  We also made a Mountain Biking video!  The video was filmed by our awesome camp counselors Sarah "Fisher" and Ellie "Babs"Phillips know A.K.A. "Fish and Chicks Productions" and stars our fabulous campers and Mountain Biking Instructors!  Our Mountain Biking Video was a blast to make and really shows the passion of all involved in the SMA Mountain Biking Program.

New Call-to-action

During the summer of 2015 at SMA Mountain Biking Teen Summer Camp we went on the following adventures:

  • Mountain Biking Camping Overnights at Susquehannock Campground at Raystown Lake
  • We rode the single track Allegrippis Trails at Raystown Lake
  • Our training ground was the SMA Bike Trails which includes rollers, table tops, banked turns, berms, drops a wooden "teater-totter" and a pump track!
  • We learned basic bike maintenance and repair
  • We put into practice the importance of single track trail etiquette
  • As "local" riders we tried to be ambassadors for the Alligrippis Trails for riders from other states and countries
  • Working with Ellie and Fisher we made the 1st ever "Mountain Bike Masters Video"!

Every year mountain biking seems to get more popular at SMA and so about 4 summers ago we decided to start the SMA Mountain Bike Masters Program.  The SMA Mountain Bike Masters Program allows campers who are passionate about mountain biking to ride world class single track trails 6 days a week. The sport of Mountain Biking is exploding in central PA with the building of the Allegrippis Trail system at Raystown Lake.  SMA is Mountain Biking Summer Camp which mean that if you are passionate about getting out on the trails everyday and improving your skills while having fun you will LOVE our camp!

This program is ideal for campers who are excited about riding world class single track trails on a daily basis. Campers are welcome to bring their own bike or ride one of ours. The Mountain Bike Masters Program is open to beginner to advanced skill levels, however, riders should feel comfortable riding single track trails. To ensure quality, this program is limited to six campers. Please note that campers not enrolled in the Mountain Bike Masters Program will get ample time to Mountain Bike during their time at SMA. Stone Mountain Adventures is an outstanding Teen Mountain Biking Camp!

The Allegrippis Trails at Raystown Lake are mountain bike optimized trails. Expect trails that contour and roll with bermed turns and lots of flow. In other words...expect a lot of fun!  Described by many as part pump track, part mountain bike trail, the Allegrippis trail system is machine built and organized in a "stacked loop" format--meaning riders can tailor the distance and difficulty of their ride. Small, easy loops are located close to trail heads and longer, more difficult loops spur from the easily-accessible trails. Endless combinations of routes can be ridden--both short and long.  Obstacles are few and far between on the Allegrippis trail system, a rarity in central Pennsylvania, which is known for its rocky terrain. Beginners will enjoy the smooth trails and lack of demanding climbs.  We are so lucky that we get to ride these trails everyday at SMA teen mountain biking camp!

The Mountain Biking Camp was so much fun this summer.  We camped out at the same spot where they host the EXPO at Dirtfest each year.  This is an ideal spot as we were close to the trails AND close to the water to cool down in after a long day of riding.  Our overnight lasted about 24 hours.  We departed camp after lunch on the first day (afternoon activity time) and return for lunch the following day (morning activity time). We spent the afternoon of the first day riding epic trails and then setting up camp.  We even got in a quick evening ride before we descended to Ryastown lake for a quick dip in the cool water.    In the evening we build an awesome campfire and ate Mountain Pies and Smores before telling ghost stories and then sleeping out under the stars!  The next morning we were up early and got a great ride in before breaking down our camp site and heading back to camp with many epic stories to tell about why we love SMA mountain biking summer camp for teenagers!

Campers not enrolled in the Mt Bike Masters Program will get ample time to mountain bike during their time at SMA.  SMA is a 2 week summer camp!
