The Raystown Branch of the Juniata River is one of the most popular rivers in central Pennsylvania for paddlers and floaters. This picturesque river is located below the Raystown Lake Dam in Huntingdon County. Because of the outflow of water from the Raystown Lake Dam the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River holds water all summer when other rivers in the area are too low to navigate safely. These factors combine to make this stretch of river from Corbin's Island to "The Point" once of the most popular rivers for canoers, kayakers and inner tubers.
There is a conflict, however because the take out at "The Point" is located at a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission River Launch Site. In accordance with Pennsylvania Law, only permitted watercraft may utilize this site. For many years the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission did not enforce this regulation so unpermitted boaters and floaters used this site on a regular basis. Over the past few years the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission started receiving complaints from permitted users and thus started enforcing this law and fining unpermitted users.
Looking for solutions
According to a recent article in the December 27th, 2016 Huntingdon Daily News "The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has awarded a grant for a new boat launch near Corbin's Island in Juniata Township upstream and across from the Point Access Launch". This is welcome new to local boaters and floaters. Huntingdon County Visitor Center executive director Matt Price explained that "This is just feed money, and at this point there's a lot more that needs to be done before we can break ground, such as designing and engineering. This grant money will go towards the planning, and hopefully the development, of the project"
