As we celebrate Presidents’ Day, I can’t help but reflect on the qualities that make great leaders—qualities like integrity, courage, teamwork, and a commitment to serving others. These are the same values we strive to instill in every camper at Stone Mountain Adventures Summer Camp for Teenagers (SMA). Nestled in the beautiful mountains of central Pennsylvania, SMA isn’t just a summer camp; it’s a place where teens and tweens grow into confident, capable, and compassionate leaders.

A Legacy of Leadership

SMA has always been about more than just fun and adventure. Since my parents, Pam and Biff Houldin, founded SMA in 1983, our mission has been to create a close-knit community where campers can thrive. Growing up here on the farm, I experienced SMA first as a camper, then as a counselor, and now as the camp director alongside my wife, Anne. Together, we bring over 40 years of experience in education, coaching, and wilderness leadership to SMA. Our goal is simple: to provide a safe, supportive environment where campers can discover their strengths, build meaningful relationships, and develop the skills they need to lead—both at camp and in life.

Leadership in Action at SMA

At SMA, leadership isn’t just a buzzword; it’s woven into everything we do. Here’s how we help campers grow into leaders:

  1. Teamwork and Collaboration:
Whether it’s working together to paddle a canoe, solve a challenge in a teambuilding evening activity, or create a masterpiece in the art studio, campers learn the importance of teamwork. These experiences teach them how to communicate effectively, support one another, and celebrate each other’s successes.

  2. Responsibility and Independence:
Living in a close-knit community means campers take on responsibilities, from helping with chores in the morning during crew to leading activities. These opportunities empower them to step up, make decisions, and take ownership of their actions—just like the great leaders we honor on Presidents’ Day.

  3. Confidence Through Challenge:
Every day at SMA, campers are encouraged to try new things and step out of their comfort zones. Whether it’s scaling a rock wall, performing in a talent show, or leading a group discussion, these experiences build self-confidence and resilience.

  4. Service and Community:
Just as great presidents have served their country, SMA campers learn the value of serving others. Through community service projects and acts of kindness, they discover how their actions can make a positive impact on the world around them.

A Safe Space to Grow

Being a teenager isn’t always easy. The pressures of school, social media, and fitting in can make it hard for teens to feel confident and secure. That’s why SMA is designed to be a safe space where campers can let go of those pressures and focus on being themselves. Our small size—just 60 campers—allows us to create a supportive, inclusive community where everyone feels valued.

Safety is always our top priority, from seat belts on trips to helmets on bikes and life jackets on the water. But emotional safety is just as important. We work hard to model positive relationships, foster authentic connections, and create an environment where campers feel free to explore who they are and who they want to become.

Join Our SMA Family

This Presidents’ Day, as we honor the leaders who have shaped our nation, I’m reminded of the incredible potential in every SMA camper. With the right guidance, support, and opportunities, they too can grow into leaders who make a difference in their communities and beyond.

If you’re looking for a summer experience that will challenge, inspire, and empower your teen, we invite you to join the SMA family. Together, we’ll create memories, build skills, and celebrate the leaders of tomorrow.

Here’s to adventure, growth, and leadership at SMA!
