Dear Parents of Future SMA Campers -

As we approach another summer season here at Stone Mountain Adventures (SMA), I want to take a moment to share with you why sending your teenager to a camp like SMA might just be the best decision you ever make. In a world dominated by technology and constant connectivity, our camp offers a unique opportunity for young people to unplug, unwind, and reconnect with the simple joys of nature and community.

Now, I know what you might be thinking—"How can I convince my teenagers to go device free while at camp?" After all, people who are teens today have had devises in their hands all their lives.   In today's digital age, the idea of going two or four weeks without a phone or tablet can feel downright scary, if not impossible to them. But trust me when I say that as someone who has witnessed it firsthand, the transformation that occurs when teens disconnect from their screens and immerse themselves in the camp experience is nothing short of remarkable.

Throughout the decades, it's always been hard to be a teenager. But in today's world, with the     looming threats of global warming, political division, and the ever-advancing tide of technology, I honestly believe it has never been harder to be a teenager than it is right now.. That's why it's so important for young people to have a space where they can escape the noise and pressure of the outside world and just be themselves.

At SMA, we provide that space—a safe haven where teens can explore the great outdoors, forge deep connections with their peers, and discover parts of themselves they never knew existed. From hiking through lush forests to swimming in crystal-clear lakes to sharing stories and laughter around the campfire, every moment at SMA is an opportunity for growth, adventure, and self-discovery.

And here's the best part: unplugging at camp is surprisingly easy. To a teenager the idea of going 2 or 4 weeks without a device feels impossible.  However in practice it is shockingly easy because none of the campers have cell phones or devices.  It would be different if all the other campers still had their devises and your child did not.  But because no camper has a cell phone the transformation is surprisingly easy.  With no cell phones or screens to distract them, campers quickly adapt to life off the grid and embrace the freedom to be fully present in the moment. Without the constant pressure to curate their online personas or keep up with the latest trends, they're free to be themselves, authentically and unapologetically.

So as you consider whether to send your teenager to camp this summer, I urge you to think beyond the fears and uncertainties. Instead, envision the incredible opportunities that await them—a chance to disconnect from the digital noise, reconnect with nature, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

With warm regards,

Jud Millar
