What Activites Would We Offer If SMA Were a "Winter" Teen Camp?

Posted by Jud Millar

Fri, Jan 29, 2016

Stone Mountain Adventures (SMA) is a Teen “Summer” Camp located in central PA serving kids ages 12 to 16. Established in 1983 by Pam and Biff Houldin, SMA continues to offer outdoor adventure activities, water-sports, traditional sports, community service, and creative arts. As a Teen “Summer” Camp our season typically runs from mid-June to the end of August.

Like many areas in the Mid-Atlantic we recently experienced a huge snowstorm that dumped 22+ inches of snow here at camp. While cooped up inside drinking hot chocolate by our wood stove watching the snow accumulate an inch an hour someone suggested “Maybe we should start an SMA Winter Camp” and that's when the brainstorming began.

What Activities would we offer if we started SMA Teen Winter Camp?

How SMA Two Week Teen Camp Will Benefit Your Child -By Felice Margiani

Posted by Jud Millar

Tue, Jan 5, 2016

The following article was written by a Former SMA Teen Camp Counselor and Current SMA Teen Camp Parent Felice  Margiani (formerly Felice Walker) who lives in Portland, Oregon.

As a college student in the 1980s, I attended a campus job fair in search of a job at a summer camp. A booth for a camp called Stone Mountain Adventures (SMA) drew me in and there I met two enthusiastic men who convinced me that SMA was no ordinary camp. They explained the camp's Mission Statement, the fantastic activities offered, and the family oriented atmosphere of the camp. They said that working at SMA was not just a job, but an adventure! I now know that stopping at the SMA booth at that job fair changed the course of my life forever. Those two inspiring guys turned out to be Biff Houldin, the former camp director and founder of SMA, and his son Jud Millar, who at that time was a camp counselor, but now owns and is affectionately known as "Camp Director Jud" at SMA Summer Camp for Teenagers.

Here at SMA Tween Summer Camp, it’s finally starting to feel like winter, but we are already thinking of ways to make next summer even more magical! Keep an eye on Jud’s Blog and the SMA Teen Summer Camp Facebook Page for events and updates about summer 2016!

Outdoor Education at Summer Camps: Learn about its Essence to Campers.

Mon, Dec 28, 2015

Here are a few things that I know for sure in no particular order:

  • Life is busy.
  • The Natural World is Beautiful

Because life is so busy it is often hard to find time to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around us.  It’s easy to take for granted that it will always be there.

As a child I remember how my parents felt about exploring nature and new places.  Growing up in the mountains and valleys of central Pennsylvania I gained an appreciation and love of nature and also be spending time in the great outdoors hiking and camping.  During these experiences I also learned a lot about myself and what was important to me.  I also made deep connections with others who shared my passion for outdoor pursuits.

Posted by Jud Millar

Tue, Dec 15, 2015

My name is Ivan Bishell and back in 2010 applied to Camp Leaders hoping to land a job at a USA Teen Summer Camp.  Some of my friends had done Camp Leaders and they told incredible stories about their experiences.  I had seen tv shows and movies of American summer camps and I just  wanted to experience it for myself. So I signed up for Camp Leaders to try and get me a place for the summer of 2010. I had a number of camps checking out my profile but nothing seemed to be happening, weeks went by until I finally saw that some one wanted me to work at their camp.

Nick Blue Reflects on his summers at SMA Wakeboarding Summer Camp!

Wed, Nov 25, 2015

My name is Nick Blue, and I have been a part of Stone Mountain Adventures for the past four years.  I came to SMA Teen Summer Camp  for my first summer in 2012 when I was fifteen years old, and for the past two summers I have been privileged with the opportunity to come back as a “Super Camper”, and both enjoy all of the amazing activities and experiences at camp, while being given some extra responsibilities due to my older age.  In less than a week from now, my time as a camper will unfortunately come to a close, however the valuable lessons I have learned, the lifelong friendships and connections I have made, and the incredible experiences I have gained will always stay with me and be a part of my daily life.

"Crapplegate's" SMA Teen Summer Camp Games Save the Day!

Posted by Jud Millar

Fri, Nov 13, 2015

My name is Chris Applegate A.K.A. "Crapplegate" and I was a counselor at SMA

Summer Camp in the glorious summer of 2012.   The Summer that I spent at on the farm at camp permanently altered the direction of my life.  After spending 7 glorious (and crazy) weeks doing awesome activities everyday and and living the "SMA Camp Lifestyle" I decided I wanted to find a way to make a difference in kids lives everyday.  That decision lead me to go back to college and become a high school physics teach at Moore Traditional High School in Louisville, Kentucky!

Being a high school physics teacher is not like being at Stone Mountain Adventures, but it has it's rewarding moments for sure. There was this one weekend last spring when I helped lead the Senior Camping Trip. We too our students to Camp Piomingo in Otter Creek Sate Park out here in KY. Everything was going okay, however there was an conflict between 2 male students that turned physical and needed to be resolved.

Here's the 3rd Session Memory Book - SMA Mountain Biking Tween Camp

Read the "Latest and Greatest" from SMA Non-Competative Summer Camp in our 3rd Session Memory Book!

Will McGlone

Words cannot describe how much this camp is loved by so many. This is my second year here at Stone Mountain and I could not love this camp more than I already do. This camp has also done so much for so many kids. The kinds of experiences you have at camp cannot be matched anywhere else. Last year I came here alone, scared, and shy. Here and only here I have met friends from all around the world who are some of the most fun people I have ever gotten to know. Friendships made here are kept for a life time. Without this camp I don’t think I would be anywhere near as happy as I am right now. Out in the real world things are not as simple like they are here at camp. The simple pleasures of camp like seeing someone slowly come out of their shell, strange stories in the cabin (The Furnace), even meeting someone that lives surprisingly close to you and you didn’t even know it! The point is this camp can AND will change your life. Take all of it in, you’ll never want to leave. Thanks again, SMA, you beautiful thing, you.
