Camp Counselor Ivan Bishell Remembers 2010 @ SMA Teen Adventure Camp

Posted by Jud Millar

Tue, Dec 15, 2015

My name is Ivan Bishell and back in 2010 applied to Camp Leaders hoping to land a job at a USA Teen Summer Camp.  Some of my friends had done Camp Leaders and they told incredible stories about their experiences.  I had seen tv shows and movies of American summer camps and I just  wanted to experience it for myself. So I signed up for Camp Leaders to try and get me a place for the summer of 2010. I had a number of camps checking out my profile but nothing seemed to be happening, weeks went by until I finally saw that some one wanted me to work at their camp.

Nick Blue Reflects on his summers at SMA Wakeboarding Summer Camp!

Wed, Nov 25, 2015

My name is Nick Blue, and I have been a part of Stone Mountain Adventures for the past four years.  I came to SMA Teen Summer Camp  for my first summer in 2012 when I was fifteen years old, and for the past two summers I have been privileged with the opportunity to come back as a “Super Camper”, and both enjoy all of the amazing activities and experiences at camp, while being given some extra responsibilities due to my older age.  In less than a week from now, my time as a camper will unfortunately come to a close, however the valuable lessons I have learned, the lifelong friendships and connections I have made, and the incredible experiences I have gained will always stay with me and be a part of my daily life.

"Crapplegate's" SMA Teen Summer Camp Games Save the Day!

Fri, Nov 13, 2015

My name is Chris Applegate A.K.A. "Crapplegate" and I was a counselor at SMA

Summer Camp in the glorious summer of 2012.   The Summer that I spent at on the farm at camp permanently altered the direction of my life.  After spending 7 glorious (and crazy) weeks doing awesome activities everyday and and living the "SMA Camp Lifestyle" I decided I wanted to find a way to make a difference in kids lives everyday.  That decision lead me to go back to college and become a high school physics teach at Moore Traditional High School in Louisville, Kentucky!

Being a high school physics teacher is not like being at Stone Mountain Adventures, but it has it's rewarding moments for sure. There was this one weekend last spring when I helped lead the Senior Camping Trip. We too our students to Camp Piomingo in Otter Creek Sate Park out here in KY. Everything was going okay, however there was an conflict between 2 male students that turned physical and needed to be resolved.

Here's the 3rd Session Memory Book - SMA Mountain Biking Tween Camp

Read the "Latest and Greatest" from SMA Non-Competative Summer Camp in our 3rd Session Memory Book!

Will McGlone

Words cannot describe how much this camp is loved by so many. This is my second year here at Stone Mountain and I could not love this camp more than I already do. This camp has also done so much for so many kids. The kinds of experiences you have at camp cannot be matched anywhere else. Last year I came here alone, scared, and shy. Here and only here I have met friends from all around the world who are some of the most fun people I have ever gotten to know. Friendships made here are kept for a life time. Without this camp I don’t think I would be anywhere near as happy as I am right now. Out in the real world things are not as simple like they are here at camp. The simple pleasures of camp like seeing someone slowly come out of their shell, strange stories in the cabin (The Furnace), even meeting someone that lives surprisingly close to you and you didn’t even know it! The point is this camp can AND will change your life. Take all of it in, you’ll never want to leave. Thanks again, SMA, you beautiful thing, you.

Stone Mountain Adventures Teen Summer Camp Poem 2015

Declan “The Scotsman” Fitzharris

Stone Mountain, it has been one hell of a summer,

It really has, one like no other,

From Sup and Sail to Canoeing, Rock climbing and Biking,

We are able to choose any activity of our liking,

This session we paddled the Yough in the rain and thunder,

Where we all conquered Dimple with no one going under,

We then move on to evening, where we do a different activity every night,

From Jud games to Invention Convention or an intimate Candle Light,

Now we are at Talent show with me expressing my talent,

And all you looking on thinking he who hasn’t.

Each session at SMA Teen Camp we take pictures of campers and staff on activities (rock climbing, wakeboarding, art studio, etc.), doing community service, participating in evening activities (Jud Games, yea!) and hanging around camp with friends. We gather the best of these photos, add a summer soundtrack, and put together a slideshow that really captures the crazy, silly, amazing, magical moments of each session.

SMA Teen Summer Camp Session 4 Update!

Posted by Jud Millar

Fri, Aug 14, 2015

The fourth and final session of Stone Mountain Adventures this summer started off with an absolute bang. Beautiful weather and an excited staff team/camper crew welcomed all of our new campers! On the very first day, we took the whole group out to Whipple Dam State Park for some chill time by the water…by the van rides home, everyone was comfortable and happy with new friends. Since that day, we’ve had nothing but nonstop fun – climbing, canoeing, SUP n’ sail, soccer, Rails to Trails biking, touch football, tennis, art studio, frisbee golf, wakeboat fun, and four awesome hikes: one along the Juniata River, one to Hunter’s Rocks, one through Trough Creek, and everyone’s favorite, the 1000 Steps hike! All three of our ‘masters’ programs are going strong – Horsemasters, Bikemasters, and Wakemasters have all had the opportunity to hone their respective skills each day. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a camper improve from day to day, or even just watch a camper open up and come into their own in the first few days of camp!

With one week of the session already completed, we’re still having the time of our lives at Stone Mountain Adventures Teen Summer Camp! The weather has been holding out for us (thankfully!) and so the kids have had the opportunity to try all of our awesome activities. Since the last update, we’ve had several canoeing trips down the Little Juniata River, plenty of afternoons at Raystown for SUP n’ Sail, Allegrippis rides, and boat fun, exciting climbs at Donation Rocks, and more games than we can count of soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and Frisbee golf! We’ve also had the opportunity to play some tennis at Juniata College and hike everywhere from Hunter’s Rocks to Shingletown.
